Blue Parrot Oceanfront Cafe, St. George Island

Hello Beach Lovers!

I was just dreaming about the island this afternoon and thought about the times we have spent sitting on the patio of the Blue Parrot, eating yummy seafood and having a few drinks.   I just went to their online beach webcam and started day dreaming.  Take a look see:

This is a great little place to hang out.   Daytime...nighttime...you pick.   Outside you will find several tables on the patio, a cool little bar and even a few tables set up out in the sand.  For overflow..or just because there is also plenty of inside seating.  I'm not sure you can really go wrong food wise here.  We have tried several of their menu items and have always come away pleased.  My personal favorites are the peel and eat shrimp and the bay scallop basket.  If you have never tried bay scallops...they are a Must.  They are quite a bit smaller than regular scallops and very sweet..you find yourself just popping them into your mouth like popcorn!

But the really great thing about this place is it is Right On The Beach!  Here you can sit...have some food...have some drinks...and watch the dolphins play.  Or...watch the sunset.  You just cannot go wrong!

There are also several neat events that the Blue Parrot hosts.  One of which is just around the corner!  The Mullet Toss!  Yep you just read that right!  How about a little fish tossing?!!  This event will be the 2nd Saturday of June...and if you are in the area you really should go check it out...and maybe even participate!  If you want more information, check out their website:  www.blueparrotsgi.com.  Look under the calendar section for all their upcoming events.

When you leave, you might pop into their cute little store and browse a bit.  You never know..you might just find something you cannot live without.

Heres hoping you find sand on your toes very soon!  Until next time...

Up The Creek Raw Bar

Do you love oysters?

We do!  Very much!  And we especially love the oysters at Up The Creek Raw Bar in Apalachicola.

Lunch at Up the Creek Raw Bar - our favorite oyster bar in Apalachicola!

We visited this restaurant for the first time in March and found ourselves going back numerous times during our week long stay on St. George Island.   You can either enter by going up the stairs on the side, or ride the elevator.  Once inside just make your way up to the counter to place your order and have a seat.  The atmosphere is very laid back and casual and you can either eat inside, or step outside and sit at either the tables or the bar along the back of the deck.  Choosing outside gives you a view as in the picture above.

We tried the oysters several ways and though they were all very very yummy, our very favorites were:

The raw oysters on the half shell;
The oysters mignonette (raw) which had shallots, habanero and white balsamic sprinkled on top; and
The oysters classic (steamed)...not classic at all, but with melted cheddar cheese, bacon and jalapenos on top.

The oysters we had were harvested right out on the bay and had a buttery and smooth taste...not salty at all like we have here in Texas.  We learned that the oysters have their delicate taste due to a certain mix of the bay water and ocean water.   It is a very unique eco-system and if that balance of the water ratio gets out of balance it actually kills the oysters.

We also tried the shrimp and were as delighted with them as we were with the oysters.

And Oh My Gosh!  The desert!  We had both the coconut creme pie and the key lime pie and they were to die for...in fact I loved them so much I made my husband buy extra to take home for later.

So the bottom line is this...Don't miss this place.  Great Food...Great Atmosphere...and Great Employees.
